Everyone "Remembers the Alamo", but very few people remember what happened afterwards.

Me with "Sam Houston"
Me with "Sam Houston"

Today, 21 April, is San Jacinto Day, the day the Texan army defeated Santa Anna and the Mexican army, basically creating Texas. "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad" was on everyone's minds and the Runaway Scrape was too fresh. Of course, this was all from the white (many with Scottish roots) settlers point of view, highly abbreviated, and can be debated in a multitude of ways and reasons.

I'm a 9th generation Texan and Daughter of the Republic of Texas, member of the San Jacinto branch, even though my family's roots are from a little further East.

Thank you, Grandpa Benjamin.
Thank you, Grandpa Benjamin.

And that is the background for this post. Mom wrote me today asking if I knew about a "Houston Church" in Scotland with ties to Sam Houston. Well, I don't. And Google on my end doesn't either. Even though there was the Clan Houston in Renfrewshire (where my son was born) and now the town of Houston (that does have a "Houston Church" as part of the Church of Christ, according to Google). And that's about where my research came to a dead end.

But on another note, the Republic of Texas did haven an embassy in London, where there's still a plaque today. According to records, Sam Houston never even went to the UK at all.

And to end the day, my sweet 8th generation Texan mother, just wants "to look for more Telford"... (and McDonald, Richardson, Allums, Williford....) I have a feeling we will run into a lot of dead ends.

But my love and ties to Scotland get stronger every day.
